90 Percent of Corn Seeds Are Coated With Bayer's Bee-Decimating Pesticide

via OrganicConsumers.org

"I’m doing something very odd this week: speaking at the annual conference of Croplife America, the main trade group for the US agrichemical industry. Croplife members include Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, and Syngenta, all massive multinational companies I write about regularly and witheringly. I am astonished that Croplife wants to hear what I have to say-what I think of the group’s member companies and their products is a matter of public record-and am curious to hear what they have to say to me.

As I prepared for the conference, a few interesting news items on the industry crossed my desk.

* As I’ve written before, Bayer’s neonicotinoid pesticides, which now coat upwards of 90 percent of US corn seeds and seeds of increasing portions of other major crops like soy, have emerged as a likely trigger for colony collapse disorder. Watch this NBC News report from last week linking bee kills in Minnesota to Bayer’s highly profitable product.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Dispatch reports similar bee die-offs in Ohio farm country, with beekeepers there, too, pointing the finger at Bayer.

* One of my biggest complaints about the agrichemical industry it its market dominance. As I say above, more than 90 percent of corn seeds planted today are treated with Bayer’s pesticide. What if a farmer wants to opt out, to plant seeds free of neonicotinoids? Good luck. According to a Pesticide Action Network press release I received today, farmers in the midwest are complaining that it’s virtually impossible to buy untreated seeds. In other words, farmers there have two choices: either pay up for Bayer’s poison, or exit the corn-growing business.”

George Washington grew hemp.  In fact, it used to be ACCEPTED as SO IMPORTANT to the economy that every farmer was REQUIRED to grow HEMP, and could even PAY THEIR TAXES WITH IT!
So, when we talk about “Legalization”, the correct term would actually be “RE-Legalization”…
Just in case you didn’t know…here’s some more HEMP INFO…

Swedish city plans to get all of its veggies from a 'Plantascraper'

Swedish Verticle Indoor Gardening Experiment - The Plantascraper

Vertical farms are skyscrapers built to grow all of the vegetables a city could need, something which proponents say would promote healthier eating habits and cut down on the costs and waste involved in transporting food from other areas. If that sounds like the future, the future is here, at least in Linköping, Sweden, which is building a vertical farm in the hopes of becoming self-sufficient.

URGENT! PLEASE ACT! Tell President Obama: No GMO Alfalfa!!

I am extremely concerned about the possibility that the USDA, bowing to corporate pressure, is going to grant permission for Monsanto’s genetically modified alfalfa to be grown in the U.S.

The decision has been rushed and the approval could happen without sufficient research on the risk this alfalfa poses to organic and other non-genetically-modified crops.

The USDA has acknowledged the risk of contamination from GMO strains of the crop, but has presented an entirely unworkable plan that does little to control actual spread of modified genes. Under the USDA’s current proposal, engineered genes from Monsanto’s alfalfa would very likely still make their way into non-GMO crops. Since GMO pollen is carried by the wind, there’s nothing farmers can do about it.1

Many consumers trust and depend on the organic label to make decisions about what they eat. GMO alfalfa would undermine the integrity of the label and be a disaster for the organic dairy industry. Until thorough research has been completed to evaluate the potential impacts, the only acceptable solution is to keep Monsanto’s seeds off the market entirely.

Also at hand is the environmental impact of Monsanto’s other Roundup Ready crops, which have promoted the spread of herbicide-resistant superweeds on millions of acres. To fight these weeds, farmers end up using even more toxic chemicals that pollute our soil and water.2

Not only that, but Monsanto has been known to plant a certain area, pollute the surrounding farms with their genetically modified seeds, which spread in the wind, and then SUE the nearby farmers for growing products with the patented Monsanto GMOs.  No kidding, this really has happened!!

The Obama Administration needs to stand up to Monsanto and Big Agriculture and protect organic products and producers.

THIS IS IMPORTANT.  NUMBERS MATTER.  If there is a big enough public outcry about this, we can affect change.  If we do nothing, we will likely lose out, and our crops will be purloined forever, that’s right, FOREVER.

Apathy will not make our world any better.  Hiding your head in the sand will not stop our world from deteriorating, and being overrun by greedy men who do not realize the damage they are doing to future generations.  I believe we need to ACT and PARTICIPATE, and if we do so, we CAN make a Difference!
