South American Summit: Obama says "No" to Legalizing Drugs

via digg.com

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and others want to talk about what they call the failed war on drugs, as President Obama tries to focus on economic ties.

CARTAGENA, Colombia April 14, 2012 — President Obama sought Saturday to emphasize the robust economic relationship between the United States and Latin America, and he flatly ruled out legalizing drugs as a way to combat the illegal trafficking that has ravaged the region.

Facing calls at a regional summit to consider decriminalization, Obama said he is open to a debate about drug policy, but he believes that legalization could lead to greater problems in countries hardest hit by drug-fueled violence.

“Legalization is not the answer,” Obama told other hemispheric leaders at the two-day Summit of the Americas.

“The capacity of a large-scale drug trade to dominate certain countries if they were allowed to operate legally without any constraint could be just as corrupting, if not more corrupting, than the status quo,” he said.

Obama told Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, host of the summit, that he is willing to discuss whether American drug laws are “doing more harm than good in certain places.”

Mitch McConnell To Constituent: Marijuana Leads To Death

[NOTE* from Leftish: Funny, how Senator McConnell has NO PROBLEM with the legality of either Alcohol OR Cigarettes, which are KNOWN killers…both of those commodities are A-OK to be legal — just not marijuana.  Hmmm…I wonder why that is.]

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told a constituent in favor of legalizing marijuana that he doesn’t support the idea because drugs like pot lead to death.

In a Feb. 14 letter to his constituent, McConnell said he has “serious concerns” about legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, a topic that the constituent had written to him about. He pointed out that the main ingredient in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol, is already available in pill form for the treatment of certain illnesses.

He is also “troubled” by the fact that many legalization proposals would make marijuana available to the public “without following the scientific processes” of the Food and Drug Administration, McConnell said.

McConnell then cites a medical marijuana bill introduced by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and raises concerns about what could happen if it became law — death.

“Because of the harm that substances like marijuana and other narcotics pose to our society, I have concerns about this legislation. The detrimental effects of drugs have been well documented: short-term memory loss, loss of core motor functions, heightened risk of lung disease, and even death,” McConnell wrote.

Pat Robertson: Marijuana should be legalized, regulated like alcohol; war on drugs has failed

March 8, 12:56 PM

RICHMOND, Va. — Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says marijuana should be legalized and treated like alcohol because the government’s war on drugs has failed.
The outspoken evangelical Christian and host of “The 700 Club” on the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network he founded said the war on drugs is costing taxpayers billions of dollars. He said people should not be sent to prison for marijuana possession.
The 81-year-old first became a self-proclaimed “hero of the hippie culture” in 2010 when he called for ending mandatory prison sentences for marijuana possession convictions.
“I just think it’s shocking how many of these young people wind up in prison and they get turned into hardcore criminals because they had a possession of a very small amount of a controlled substance,” Robertson said on his show March 1. “The whole thing is crazy. We’ve said, ‘Well, we’re conservatives, we’re tough on crime.’ That’s baloney.”

f="http://leftish.tumblr.com/post/17843871845/obamas-war-on-drugs-is-definitely-not-a">OBAMA’S “WAR ON DRUGS” is definitely NOT a “Job-Creator”…

Does he not realize how our economy is fueled by the Weed Industry? Does he not realize how many jobs he kills every time the DOJ conducts a raid?

Especially here in California!  Who do you think is buying all those shiny new Pick-Up Trucks?

I don’t understand targeting pot-heads!

“Cannabis has been in this country a lot longer than White People have been, and it was used as a painkiller back in colonial days - when the biggest drug problem in this country is the same as the biggest drug problem today: ALCOHOL!

Washington grew it, Jefferson grew it.  Nowadays, we’d lock them up if we ever locked up rich, white guys for pot.” ~ John Fugelsang

We don’t put alcoholics in prison. I’m just against the War on Drugs the way its happening.  There’s other ways you can handle it.

If you treat it like a crime, and you throw these kids, like we have for decades, in prison because they smoked a little bit of marijuana, and they come out violent criminals, that “War on Drugs” has failed.

I’m against the Federal “War on Drugs”, I’m not pro-drug usage, as a matter of fact I’m very critical of the carelessness of doctors who give way too many pain pills.  There’s more people addicted to prescription drugs than there are to illegal drugs!”

British Prisoner Grew Weed In Jail Cell
A British prisoner was able to grow cannabis in his jail cell and even decorate a four-foot plant as a Christmas tree thanks to some clueless prison guards.
Twenty-eight-year-old Mohamed Jalloh, who was serving an 8-year sentence for supplying Class A drugs, succeeded in convincing jail staff that his cannabis crop was tomato plants. The Sun reports that Jalloh grew his plants for at least five months and that prison officers and bosses at Verne Prison admired his botanical skills.

Canadian judge rules Anti-Depressants like Prozac can cause teens to commit murder

(via NaturalNews - 12/18/11) The use of antidepressant and psychiatric drugs, particularly among children, is an extremely risky activity that could have fatal consequences for both the individuals that use them, as well as their friends and family.

According to the National Post, a Canadian judge recently ruled that the extreme mind-altering effects of the antidepressant drug Prozac were in large part responsible for causing a 15-year-old boy to thrust a nine-inch kitchen knife into one of his closest friends.

Though the Winnipeg boy that committed the heinous crime had allegedly abused prescription drugs and “experimented” with cocaine long prior to the incident, he had never had a violent or aggressive personality about him, according to reports. It was only when he began taking Prozac, the very thing doctors had given him as a so-called “solution” to his previous illicit drug problems, that he began to rapidly go off the deep end.

“He had become irritable, restless, agitated, aggressive and unclear in his thinking,” said Justice Robert Heinrichs of the Manitoba Justice Department, who ruled on the case. “It was while in that state he overreacted in an impulsive, explosive and violent way. Now that his body and mind are free and clear of any effects of Prozac, he is simply not the same youth in behavior or character.”

What the judge appears to be implying here is that Prozac is directly responsible for altering the brain of a user and causing them to think irrationally, which in turn can cause them to harm themselves or others. In other words, if it were not for the use of this mind-warping drug, the murderer in this case most likely would never have dreamed of slaughtering one of his best friends.

Judge Heinrichs ultimately determined that, because of the drug’s involvement, the boy who murdered his friend would not be tried in an adult court. Even though the boy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, the judge only added a ten-month sentence on top of the two years that the boy had already spent in jail pending the trial — and there will apparently be no appeal, which is a first in any North American court.

In a similar outcome back in 2001, a Wyoming jury ruled that the antidepressant drug Paxil had caused a man to murder his wife, daughter, and granddaughter, after which he killed himself.

And one of the mass-murderers in the infamous Columbine High School shooting, Eric Harris, had allegedly been taking the antidepressant drug Luvox at the time that he participated in the tragedy.
