Occupy Oakland: FBI refuses Occupy FOIA requests citing "National Security"

via The Daily Kos

Although the FBI has been forthcoming about their involvement in domestic spying regarding some of the Occupy activities of Constitutionally protected protests the ACLU has received a disturbing response regarding Occupiers in Northern California. I immediately thought of Occupy Oakland when I saw this:

“in the interest of national defense or foreign policy.”

…Perhaps they consider Northern California the hippie vortex- the source of peace, love, and tolerance- three things authoritarians hate thus must be prevented from spreading.

ut more troubling than what the FBI has revealed is what it’s refused to reveal. We asked for FBI records about Occupy protests in Northern California, where several of the most high profile demonstrations have taken place, as well as intelligence bulletins, training materials, or justifications for investigating the Occupy movement anywhere in the country. The agency claims it only has a grand total of 37 pages on all of these topics, and is refusing to hand over more than half of those documents. One of the justifications for withholding the information, is that it supposed must be kept secret “in the interest of national defense or foreign policy.”

f="http://leftish.tumblr.com/post/24961559223/ive-been-away-lately">I’ve been away lately.

New Kittens, and my 100 year old father’s passing have taken up most of my time.

Also, I’ve been depressed about politics, and feeling frustration with my own unimportance and impotence.  I can’t seem to inspire anyone to get more involved politically, and I understand their apathy.  It seems so hopeless.  I care desperately about our planet’s future, and about injustices in our world that could lead to further oppression, but see no other way to combat the direction we are going besides us all banding together and demanding change.

I had such high hopes for Occupy, but the Government nipped that in the bud, and squashed many of our hopes.  IMHO the “Occupy Brand” has been wrongfully sullied, but nonetheless, no longer has a pristine and pacifistic reputation.

All those people who came out last fall are still around…We have the numbers, and we could “win”, but not without the courage to stand up and be willing to die for these causes.

I know, it’s heavy to picture dying for a cause, but our WORLD is dying, and soon, too.  If we care about our future, we need to do something about it.

Declaration from Occupy San Francisco General Assembly

[NOTE* from Leftish:  This is IT!  This is what the media wanted from us 7 months ago, today!!  Yes, today is Occupy’s 7 month Birthday…and what a great Birthday Present!  FINALLY A COHESIVE, WELL THOUGHT-OUT MISSION STATEMENT….I hope all Occupy Movements throughout the country will adopt this…it’s THAT good!]

It has been well-established in declaration and law that all people are endowed with inalienable rights, among them life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly. We, and our descendants, share common human needs — a sustainable global…

Occupy Wall Street Activists Respond to the 99 Percent Spring | The Nation

Seizing on the popularity of Occupy Wall Street, a broad coalition of liberal-left groups and organizations created the 99 Percent Spring, a movement aiming to recruit and train 100,000 Americans to learn the ways of non-violent direct action. The initiative includes support from MoveOn.org, AFL-CIO, Greenpeace, the Working Families Party, 350.org, Campaign for America’s Future, United Students Against Sweatshops, CodePink, Global Exchange and Color of Change, among other groups.

The plan has been heavily promoted by celebrities such as Edward Norton, Elijah Wood, Marisa Tomei and Jason Alexander and political heavyweights like Van Jones, founder of Rebuild the Dream.

However, Occupy Wall Street protesters have expressed mixed feelings about the 99 Percent Spring, a response that should have been expected given a statement like, “Occupiers have varying opinions,” is a beige platitude akin to, “humans have varying opinions on life.” OWS is a big tent movement, and as such, it attracts the entire gamut of the (generally) lefty political spectrum.

f="http://leftish.tumblr.com/post/21254049360/big-labor-has-endorsed-president-obama">“Big Labor” has endorsed President Obama.

The SEIU spokeswoman I saw on Democracy Now said,

“We agree, all across SEIU, that we need to stand for a 99% agenda, and re-elect our President, Barack Obama.”

WTF?  I find this VERY upsetting!

Obama can’t co-opt the Occupy Movement!  Obama, by his silence, has shown himself to be anti-Occupy.  He  stood by as Occupiers were unfairly and illegally being beaten, abused, injured and jailed by vicious, over-zealous police from coast to coast.

He cannot seriously hope to adopt the Occupy terminology, and make like he’s one of us!  Goldman Sachs was his largest donor in 2008!  He is under their employ!

Besides, Occupy is all for Transparency…Obama has gone after more whistleblowers than all the other Presidents since 1917 combined.  Obama said that Bradley Manning was guilty, before he had even been charged.  Obama thinks Assange is a traitor.  Obama has continued George Bush’s policies of chipping away at our constitutional rights in the name of protecting us from terrorism.  Obama completely failed to keep his campaign promise of having greater transparency in his administration.

Occupy is against Corporations funding Governmental Candidates…Obama’s biggest contributor in 2008 was Goldman-Sachs.

Occupy is for PEACE.  Obama has tripled the troops in Afghanistan, is using drones in several middle eastern countries, wants to start a war in Iran, has condoned police injuring and jailing innocent Americans whose only “crime” was that they wanted exercise their Constitutional Right to air their grievances.  Obama has killed American citizens who were targeted by drone attacks on foreign soil, without a trial.  Obama has accepted “collateral damage” as a necessary evil when targeting Americans in foreign countries.

The list is long…of all the ways that Obama is NOT acting like someone whose interests are aligned with those of the 99%.

I hope nobody else thinks that Obama’s policies are in any way connected with the Occupy Movement.  It’s just not true.

[NOTE* from Leftish: This does not mean that I won’t hold my nose and vote for Obama in November.  He is still the “lesser of two evils” no matter which candidate wins the GOP Primary.  I might vote for a third party candidate if it looks like Obama has CA in the bag, and my vote will not actually be needed to keep the Republican out of the White House….but in states where it counts…we should all vote for Obama over the GOP candidate.

I know, you are probably pissed, just like me, and don’t even want to participate in the whole bullshit Democrat-Republican game…however, politicians do actually influence our lives, they decide whether to send us into war, and how our money gets spent…so I think we should vote, and Obama is a tiny bit better than whomever the GOP candidate will be (unless, perhaps, if Ron Paul were to win — but that ain’t about to happen)!
