Anyone who thinks Chris Christie is an honorable man, and that the NJ Governor knew nothing about Bridgegate is just not thinking straight.
The guy’s a crook. It’s all in the body language. He’s a snake oil salesman, but, unfortunately there’s a lot of dumbasses who think they LIKE snake oil, and they want to hold on to their snake oil, and they want to believe their snake oil salesman is selling them a truly valuable product, even though the stuff is starting to smell bad, and make them sick.
They CAN’T let go of the Christie dream (or fantasy, depending on how you look at it)! He was the guy who was gonna take down the GIRL! These people, who are defending him, are doing so because he was their last hope. Not because they could possibly believe him.
And even if he was uninformed, he is still toast. These cable hosts who say, well, if there are no direct emails linking him to the shutdown, then he is fine, and he can weather this…they aren’t thinking straight. His opposition will ROAST him with this! They will say, “Who wants a President who delegates tons of power to his subordinates and then doesn’t keep tabs on them? That’s all we need is a rogue Secretary of State, or Secretary of Defense, making decisions behind the President’s back? Imagine if Christie appointed someone to one of those posts who decided to act on his own?”
As I see it, either way, Christie’s Presidential Campaign is o-v-e-r. He’s either a corrupt and terrible public servant, or he’s terrible leader. Either way, he’s unelectable, and will never get the support of his party. He already had problems with the “Conservative Base” of the GOP…now he has problems with the donors, too. Nope, I just don’t see a Presidential nomination happening for Governor “I knew nothing” Christie.
So, to recap: If the Governor knew, he is screwed BECAUSE he knew, any Public Servant should know that closing the lanes on the bridge was a completely unethical action.
Conversely, if Christie DIDN’T know, he is also screwed, because he DIDN’T know, which means he is an inadequate and substandard leader.
But, IMHO, there is no way in HELL that Christie was uninformed, and knew nothing about the bridge scandal.
His very first remark should have been a warning.
As I see it, there’s one good way to tell if someone is lying — put yourself in their position.
Imagine if Christie was innocent. Would he REALLY have made that flip remark about the cones? Would you?
No, if he REALLY knew nothing about it, wouldn’t his response have shown more sincerity and concern for his beloved New Jerseyans? Wouldn’t he have wanted to get to the bottom of this mess, and punish the dweeb who created it? Wouldn’t he have ranted and raved, and shook his fists in the air, because he was pissed, and he wanted us to know it? Would he really have gone all sarcastic, unless he had something to hide? What would have been your response?
What prompted Christie to take the offensive (but actually defensive) stance that he did? Fear of getting caught, perhaps? He probably thought, “Better throw the sharks off!” And so he fell back upon his typical response when he is being threatened: ATTACK! BULLY THEM INTO SHUTTING UP! THROW THEM OFF GUARD, SO THEY FORGET THEIR FUCKING QUESTION!!
No, in my opinion, his initial response was improbable, for someone who really knew nothing about it.
Same goes for Christie’s Lieutenant Governor, Kim Guadagno’s response to Hoboken Mayor, Dawn Zimmer’s accusations. If it were me, and I had never said any of the things that Mayor Zimmer was accusing me of, I wouldn’t slowly read a prepared statement with zero emotion. I’d have been adamant. I’d have been passionate. I would have hotly denied it, vehemently denied it, at least three or four times! I would have raged at the hubris of this Democratic Mayor to have dared to accuse me of such abominable behavior! That’s what I would have done. Guadagno’s response was inappropriate, if you think about how an innocent person would have reacted.
Guadagno, however, did say something about “welcoming an investigation” into the matter, and that doing so would set the record straight…but I seem to recall one Rob Blagojevich saying pretty much the exact same thing, and we know how that went.
