f="http://leftish.tumblr.com/post/80646303327/there-is-no-such-thing-as-an-independent-press">“There is no such thing as an Independent Press.” ~ John Swinden, 1953

[Excerpt from the then head of the NY Times, John Swinden’s toast to “an independent press” at a 1953 gathering of the National Press Club.]

Full Quote:

“There is no such thing [at this date of the world’s history in America], as an independent press.

You know it, and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write his honest opinion, and if you did, you know beforehand it would never appear in print.

I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things. and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allow my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before 24 hours, my occupation would be gone.

The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it, and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press?

We are the tools and the vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks. They pull the strings, and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.”

10 Things John Boehner Wouldn't Stand For at the State of the Union Address

VIDEO: 10 Things John Boehner Wouldn’t Stand For at the State of the Union Address

There were many standing ovations during President Barack Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address on Tuesday, but few from House Speaker John Boehner.

Boehner declined to stand during several key moments of Obama’s address, even while Vice President Joe Biden stood next to him. Those moments that did not move Boehner to his feet included bipartisan applause lines for enhancing childhood education, a vote on immigration reform, protecting the right to vote, honoring our wounded warriors and putting our country before our party.

Watch video of Boehner at State of the Union.

THE BIGGEST THREAT TO MEANINGFUL CLIMATE REFORM IS OUR SILENT MEDIA!
If no network allows their anchors to cover Climate Change, how can the public know how outraged they should be?
(I’m telling you, if you want the REAL NEWS, tune in to Democracy Now with Amy Goodman on LinkTV — either online or on your TV.)
MSNBC calls itself “forward” thinking?  Yet, did you hear A WORD about the 48 arrests at the White House yesterday, anywhere on their network?  Among those arrested were Daryl Hannah, Bill McKibben of 350.org, Robert Kennedy, Jr., and The Sierra Club’s Executive Director, Michael Brune.
This non-coverage is BULLSHIT…and, like it or not, nature won’t WAIT for our politicians to be courageous enough to stand up against Big Oil!  The Arctic is melting whether we are made aware of it or not.
Here’s what you didn’t see covered by our national media, not even on Cable News:

Please "Like" the Save Our Post Office Facebook Page

It’s not over yet!  Bernie Sanders and many others have vowed to fight the Saturday closings, and small rural post office closings.

We need to put our heads together and come up with actions and petitions that will reverse the horrible law that has caused the Post Office to be having such severe problems right now.

[“The Postal Service’s financial losses result from “a 2006 law that drains $5 billion a year from post office revenue” - read more.]

We need to come up with ways to funnel money into the USPS coffers.

1) BUY BOOKS OF STAMPS!

2) USE THE POST OFFICE EXCLUSIVELY, rather than using other more expensive, privately owned companies like UPS or FedEx.

3) SEND BACK JUNK MAIL, INCLUDING UNFILLED OUT CREDIT CARD OFFERS IN THEIR PRE-PAID ENVELOPES .

On the 100th Anniversary of her birth, the U.S.P.S. released a Rosa Parks Stamp today.
Prisoner 7053
A Tampa Bay Times EditorialPublished October 26, 2005
Three other black people obeyed the driver and gave up their seats for the white man who had just boarded the bus. Rosa Parks refused. It was not because her feet hurt, as the legend has it. What she was too tired to suffer any longer was the indignity of being treated in such a way.
The Montgomery police arrested her, took her fingerprints, sat her for a mug shot holding a board with the number 7053, and put her in a cell. A half-century later, it is too easy to forget what courage it took for her to risk all that. When she called home, her mother’s first thought was to ask, “Did they beat you?” It took even greater heroism for Parks to agree to make a test case of it. Alabama was not pleasant or even safe for her and her husband after that, and they moved to Detroit.
The Supreme Court had already declared school segregation unconstitutional. With the arrest of Parks on Dec. 1, 1955, the civil rights crusade moved from the courtroom into the streets and eventually the halls of Congress. It precipitated the Montgomery bus boycott and the rise of its leader, the future Nobel laureate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It inspired a bus boycott in Tallahassee the following year and student-led lunch-counter sit-ins throughout the South. It culminated in the enactment of one of the nation’s greatest laws, the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Rosa Parks, who died Monday, was the right person at the right time and the right place. She deserved all the honor and glory that came her way. But it is also too easy to forget that what she began remains unfinished. There are no more segregation laws to enforce but some police still harass black people because of their race. Discrimination endures in housing, employment and education in violation of the letter as well as the spirit of the law. Parks did her part. The rest is left to us.

Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked the collective freak out over President Barack Obama’s claim in an interview with The New Republic that he goes skeet-shooting “all the time” at Camp David.

Stewart was incredulous at Obama’s claim himself — he compared Obama telling TNR of his gun-toting ways to telling Ms. Magazine of his love of NASCAR. But he also couldn’t believe there was so much pining among Fox News and other media figures for the White House to release a picture.

"Why won’t the black man half the country lives in fear of release a picture of himself holding a gun?" Stewart said, mockingly.

Jon Stewart pictures Obama with a Gun

Stewart ended the segment by reading Obama a fake Dr. Seuss book:

Oh, the People who Hate You:

They do not like you Barack Obama

Whether on a train, a plane, or llama.

They do not like you shooting skeet.

They do not like you eating meat.

They do not like you drinking beer.

Or even if you rope a steer.

They won’t like you with the Monster Trucks,

because, young man, they do not give a fuck.

They do not like you when you pray,

They did not like you anti-Gay,

They do not like you cutting tax.

They could not stand when you wore your “Mommy” Slacks.

You cannot reach across the aisle,

‘Cause everything you do is vile.

They complained when you killed Osama!

So on a train, a plane, or a llama,

Rolling a 44 at Bowl-O-Rama,

Despite your nice white Kansas mama,

comma,

they do not like you, Barack Obama.”

48 Hours to get European leaders to ban bee killing pesticides

Quietly, globally, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. But in 48 hours the European Union could move to ban the most poisonous pesticides, and pave the way to a global ban that would save bees from extinction.

Four EU countries have begun banning these poisons, and some bee populations are already recovering. Days ago the official European food safety watchdog stated for the first time that certain pesticides are fatally harming bees.

Now legal experts and European politicians are calling for an immediate ban. But Bayer and other giant pesticide producers are lobbying hard to keep them on the market.

If we build a huge swarm of public outrage now, we can push the European Commission to put our health and our environment before the profit of a few.

We know our voices count! Last year, our 1.2 million strong petition forced US authorities to open a formal consultation on pesticides — now if we reach 2 million, we can persuade the EU to get rid of these crazy poisons and pave the way for a ban worldwide.

If you like Peaches, Apples, Cherries, Melons, Tomatoes and produce in general, please help.  We need to act before it’s too late.

Sign the urgent petition and send this to everyone — Avaaz and leading MEPs will deliver our message ahead of this week’s key meeting in Brussels:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/hours_to_save_the_bees/?bwpEsbb&v=21421

Bees don’t just make honey, they are vital to life on earth, every year pollinating 90% of plants and crops — with an estimated $40bn value and over one-third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves.

Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations — some bee species are already extinct and some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Scientists have been scrambling for answers and now the European Food Safety Authority is saying that toxic chemicals called neonicotinoid pesticides could be responsible for the bee deaths. France, Italy, Slovenia and even Germany, where the main manufacturer Bayer is based, have banned one of these bee-killing pesticides. But Bayer continues to export its poison across the world.

Now the issue is coming to a boil. EU parliamentarians are stepping up their pressure on the European Commission and key governments to push new legislation to ban the deadly pesticides, and we can offer them the public support they need to counter the powerful pesticide lobby. Sign the urgent petition to Europe’s leaders, then forward this email widely:

Drone Warfare
KILLING BY REMOTE CONTROL
Medea Benjamin
Foreword by Barbara Ehrenreich
“In this remarkably cogent and carefully researched book, Medea Benjamin makes it clear that drones are not just another high-tech military trinket. Drone Warfare sketches out the nightmare possibilities posed by this insane proliferation.” —Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed
“Activist extraordinaire Medea Benjamin has documented how the U.S. government’s use of drones to murder hundreds of innocent civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen has increased the danger to our national security. Benjamin’s Drone Warfare is the first book that reveals the vocal international citizen opposition that challenges the legality and morality of America’s extrajudicial execution drones before they kill here at home.” —Ann Wright, U.S. Army colonel (ret.) and former deputy chief of mission for U.S. embassies in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and elsewhere.”

PLEASE HELP SAVE THE BEES!

European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), has for the first time labeled the pesticide clothianidin as an “unacceptable” danger to bees.

Tell the EPA: Immediately suspend the pesticide that’s killing bees!
Scientists have long thought that clothianidin is at least partially to blame for the alarming rate that bees have been dying off in the U.S. - nearly 30% of our bee population, per year, has been lost to so-called colony collapse since 2006.But the EPA has repeatedly ignored scientists’ warnings and Americans’ urgings to ban its use, citing lack of evidence. Now, the EFSA study could be a major breakthrough to convince the EPA to take emergency action, and suspend the use of clothianidin to stop the precipitous decline in global honeybee populations.SIGN THE PETITION! http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/efsa_bees/?r_by=53576-1140877-qtfZl6x&rc=paste1
